Toothpaste is available in paste, gel or powder form. Despite the many types of tooothpaste, some ingredients are common to most varieties:
1. Abrasives: polish teeth and remove stains.
2. Fluoride: make teeth more resistant to decay and stronger.
3. Antimicrobial agents (xylitol, triclosan): fight the bacteria of dental plaque and gum disease.
4. Surfactants: carry away debris from the mouth and in between teeth.
5. Anti-tartar agents: prevent the formation of tartar.
6. Desensitizing agents: relieve tooth sensitivity.
7. Binding agents: bind all the components of the toothpaste together.
8. Humectant: prevent the toothpaste from drying up.
9. Flavor: make the brushing experience more enjoyable.
10. Sweetening agents: make the formulation more suitable for oral use.
